Futures Pointing to Interest Rate Breakout

Everybody knows interest rates will move higher, but when?

Inflation could push long rates higher as soon as this spring and summer. But Bernanke and the new FOMC won’t tip their hand on short-term rates. Fortunately, we can look at the Fed Funds futures to see what the smart money is saying:

Implied Yield on 30-day Fed Funds futures contract

July 2011: 0.18%

January 2012: 0.42%

July 2012: 0.97%

January 2013: 1.67%

Best guess right now on the first Fed interest rate hike is the January 2012 meeting.

Green Banking Starting to Take Off

Green banking is really nothing more than socially-responsible banking. The easiest way to “go green” is to convert to online banking and online bill payment, features of nearly all FDIC-insured banks these days. Just make sure your bank is not going to charge you any extra fees to convert to online banking. After all, online banking is cheaper for their operations as well as easier on the environment than branch banking. There are many banks that will offer a reward, like a rate bonus or cash bonus, for opening an online account. It may pay to search for the best online bank deal in your local area (if you still need branch banking) or consider an online green bank with a long history of paying high rates on bank deposit accounts. Some of the big players for the last 10 years include:

EverBank

ING Direct

VirtualBank

Bank of Internet
